Mrs. Matt was born in Germany and arrived in this country when she was 8 years of age. She resided with her parents in Cincinnati, Ohio for several years and from there moved to Clayton county where she has since resided. She was married to Joseph Matt, who died in 1883 and to them was born eight children, seven of whom are still living: Mrs. Herman Oval of Lamont, Ia.; Mrs. Gerhardt Beiring of Carroll, Ia.; Mrs. Henry Fassbinder of Guttenberg; Mrs. Joseph Zapf of Elkader; Mrs. Clara Howe of Chicago; Albert Matt and Alex Matt of Garber. Deceased was of a sunny disposition, a kind and noble woman and leaves a host of friends who deeply mourn her death. Funeral services were held Tuesday of the Catholic church at Garnavillo, Ia., Rev. Fr. Baumholt officiating. May she rest in peace.<br>BookCJosephandTheresaReisemanMattCHistoryofClaytonCountyCPage: Family genealogies: birth: October 1839; Germany Joseph Matt (1832-1883) was Matthias's younger brother by seven years and he also came with Mathias and his wife to America. Joseph settled in the area of Elkport. He and his wife, Theresa Reiseman b. 1837 (sic/1839), had eight children: Alexander m. Mary Eggert and had three children. Albert m. Minnie Meyer and had six children. Clara m. Louis Howe and had two children. Ida m. Joseph Zapf and had four children. Matilda m. Henry Fassbinder and had seven children. Josephine m. Herman Ovel and had six children. George never married. Emma m. Gerhard Beyrink and had two adopted children. Because Mathias Matt had a son named Joseph too, in order to keep the two identified; the one from Elkport was called "the water Matt" and the other one from Garnavillo was called "the prairie Matt." Joseph and his brother Mathias were both buried side by side in the new city cemetery at Garnavillo, Ia. This was a large family and it seemed rather unusual that of the eight children, six died of cancer and two died of old age.
