Records say born in "Prussia", though he was born in Liechtenstein. Was born in House #45 Old / #43 New, which his father bought in 1818. Moved to Iowa. Lived in Pennsylvania for a while. "Book" says he was a stone and brick mason, but stories say he was a farmer before coming to America. Hardworking and forward thinking. Voyage to America took 40 days. Supposedly felt remorse for selling his father's farm, one surmises very little was heard from him back home. He was surrounded by many Mauren compatriots in Garnavillo. He and his wife were the only ones to work on their respectable farm until harvest time. Helped his cousin Andres in every way possible when he immigrated to America. He wanted to see his youngest daughter married before he died, which occured a few hours before his death. Lived with his daughter Anna and her husband Herman Bern's farm when he retired. Lived nearby his son Joseph. He married Elizabeth Louisa Potes, a native of Mecklenburg-Schwerein, Germany, b . 1826 - d. Feb. 19, 1879. Mathias was a stone and brick mason in his native country, but at the age of 27 he decided to come to America. Mathias Matt settled in the Garnavillo area after first spending time in Pennsylvania. He and his wife raised five children. Anna b. Nov. 1, 1877, d. March 6, 1966, m. Herman Berns. Joseph b. April 15, 1855, d. Aug. 9, 1923, m#1 Mary Berns, m#2 Mary Harmack. Louise m#1 Ben Johnson, m#2 Strickford. Had a daughter, Ruth. Amelia m. Frank Wolter and a son, Oscar. Louis b. Aug. 10, 1860, d. Nov. 27, 1939, m. Katherine Wolter and had seven children: Delbert, Walter, Olivia, Louis Jr., Ben, Lucille, Veronica. Mathias Matt purchased land and became a farmer in the Garnavillo prairie. The homestead and the farm is now owned by Louis Matt III. Mathias d. Jan. 9, 1890. His wife, Elizabeth d. Feb. 19, 1879. They are both buried in the city cemetery at Garnavillo. An interesting fact about Mathias was that he wished to see his youngest daughter married before he died. Her marriage did take place just a few hours before his death. That daughter was Amelia Matt who married Frank Wolter.
